Experience a powerful journey through two of the greatest piano trios ever composed, showcasing the brilliance and emotional depth of Beethoven and Shostakovich.
The program opens with Beethoven’s Piano Trio in B-flat major, Op. 97, “Archduke.” This piece is dedicated to Archduke Rudolph, who was Beethoven’s piano student, his only full-fledged composition student, and his good friend. It was Beethoven’s greatest and final piano trio. Written during a time of optimism in Beethoven’s life, the piece is upbeat with expansive structure and noble character.
In contrast, Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E minor, Op. 67 is expressive and somber. It was written in memory of Ivan Sollertinsky, Shostakovich’s friend and colleague who had died earlier in the year, during a time when the Russians were struggling against a long German occupation.
Join us for an unforgettable evening of artistry and contrast—where Beethoven’s triumphant elegance meets Shostakovich’s searing intensity.
