CURED Screening and Discussion:
A Journey Towards LGBTQ+ Rights and Understanding
Tuesday, October 17 | 6:00-8:00pm
Mabel Brown Room, L.P. Young Student Center, Keene State College
In recognition of LGBTQ+ History Month, the Human Rights Committee of the City of Keene and Keene State College are hosting a screening of a 35-minute preview of CURED, an award-winning documentary that highlights the remarkable campaign to remove homosexuality from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). It chronicles the inspiring journey of passionate activists who challenged societal norms and fought tirelessly for LGBTQ+ rights in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
After the film, there will be small group discussions and a panel discussion with one of the co-directors to learn more about the project and this important history. These discussions will delve into the themes and concepts presented in the film. Specifically, the discussions will center around how misconceptions and inaccurate notions about queer identity and experiences continue to exist within various domains such as politics, medicine, and education. This event aims to foster a deeper understanding of these issues and promote thoughtful dialogue among participants.
Following this event, the full 80-minute film will be available to stream from October 18-24.
The event is made possible through the collaborative efforts of the City of Keene's Human Rights Committee and Keene State College, with the generous support of Keene Endowment Association, Keene Pride, Keene YMCA, Maps Counseling Services, Monadnock Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Coalition, Monadnock Family Services, and New Hampshire Psychological Association.
