Make your own Drop Spindle

Learn to make your own Drop Spindle!  In this class we’ll be learning ways to create and customize our own Drop Spindles. There are lots of reasons to make your own Drop Spindle: maybe you want more than one, or maybe you want to personalize it, or perhaps you want to give one as a handmade gift.  This class teaches you how to make your own, functional and creative, Drop Spindle. For centuries, the hand spindle played a role in producing thread and yarn. It is still a tool used in parts of the world today. The form and function of the spindle is basically the same everywhere. It has a very simple design consisting of a shaft and a weight. The materials used to make the spindle in the past consisted of whatever was readily available at the time. The majority of the spindles available, today, have wooden shafts with a wooden disc as the whorl (weight). We’ll be making learning to make a Drop Spindle from materials readily available and then various ways of customizing it.  This course will provide a good amount of time for students to work individually with a variety of materials, such as paint, wood burners, carving to tools, to work on and personalize their wooden spindle. Oct 23rd, 10-3pm, $65, includes all tools and materials to make at least one Drop Spindle.
